It All Starts with the Microphone from Heil Sound is a primer that describes the differences between the many kinds of microphones. From condensers, omnidirectionals, and dynamics, to electrets and ribbons.
This small book contains an examination of how each one works and is best used. It also describes mic technique: how to set them up, at what distance from the source they should be placed, and how they capture sound, since each type will reproduce the sound differently.
Microphone characteristics ranging from proximity effects to frequency response are also discussed. Supporting all of this information are charts and simple diagrams that illustrate basic recording principles and theory.
This book also take "live versus recording" environments into consideration and how microphones will affect the final product. Additionally, it gives you all of the ins and outs, pluses and minuses, and characteristics of all types of microphones.
It will show and teach you when to use each type of microphone... and when not to.
